Mayors Youth Employment Program
What is MYEP?
The Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP) was established in 2011 to not only provide students with opportunities in the workforce, but also strengthen the community by preparing the next generation to create an even brighter and more successful city.
This month-long paid summer internship is open to high school juniors and seniors who live in Stamford. MYEP gives students more than just work experience, it helps them explore their career goals, grow into young professionals, and develop the critical skills and confidence they need to stand out in an increasingly competitive workforce.
Since its founding, MYEP has welcomed thousands of students and built partnerships with hundreds of organizations throughout Stamford and beyond. From medicine, law, finance, hospitality, and engineering to nonprofits, education, and more, our students have had the opportunity to explore a wide range of industries while working with organizations ranging from local businesses to leading global companies.
With every student, employer, and community partner, MYEP continues to invest in the future of Stamford. Because building the next generation starts now, we are committed to Inspiring Tomorrow, Today.
Taking a look at what our students accomplished this summer, we visited several of their work sites to hear directly from students and their supervisors about their experiences. From urban planning and 3D printing to working at AI startups and strengthening communication skills in fast-paced environments like the Residence Inn, students gained hands-on experience across a wide range of industries.
But students walked away with more than just new skills and completed projects, they built meaningful professional connections and made lasting impressions. Some employers were so impressed with their students that they offered them the opportunity to continue working even after the MYEP summer program ended!

“Before MYEP, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do in the future or what career path was right for me. This experience gave me the chance to step outside my comfort zone, learn new things, and discover a passion for finance that I didn’t know I had. It helped me see what I’m capable of and gave me a clearer idea of what I want to work toward. I’m leaving MYEP feeling more confident, motivated, and excited about the opportunities ahead.””

City of Stamford – Department of Operations - Web Development & IT Intern
“Stepping outside my comfort zone was one of the biggest lessons I learned throughout this experience. At first, I wasn't always confident enough to speak up, ask questions, or put myself out there. But as time went on, I realized that growth comes from being willing to try new things, even when they feel intimidating. I learned to take chances, trust myself, and embrace opportunities I might have been too afraid to pursue before. Looking back, I'm proud of how much I've grown and how much more confident I've become.”

Interned at City of Stamford - Board of Education: Benefits
“As an Engineering Assistant, I gained experience working both inside and outside of the office. Inside the office, I got to file papers and make spreadsheets for items like plans, which gave me the chance to both extend my excel skills and look over many small details that go into different projects. Outside of the office, I helped and observed coworkers at places like the new police station that is currently being built, Veterans Park, and different schools. I also worked on my communications skills while interacting with different contractors”

Interned at the City of Stamford: Engineering Department
I worked in the Engineering Department, where I learned that relationship building and communication are essential in the workplace. I interacted with coworkers, contractors, civil engineers, and architects and saw how each person plays an important role in completing projects successfully and on time. This taught me the importance of teamwork and cooperation at every level.
The experience also helped me strengthen my communication skills, build professional connections, and become more comfortable asking for advice about college, future jobs, and engineering. Through networking and working with others, I learned a lot and grew both personally and professionally.

Interned at the City of Stamford: Engineering Bureau
“Working in the Engineering Bureau helped me learn not only about engineering, but also how to communicate ideas in a way everyone can understand. I worked on several real-world projects, including the rehabilitation of a historic bridge and the construction of a new animal shelter and police station. I also attended city government meetings, where I learned how important it is for engineers to clearly explain their ideas to people outside of their field. This experience gave me insight into engineering, communication, and the politics involved in completing city projects.”
